Mocha Banana Protein Smoothie

September 24, 2026

Not everyone wakes up on the bright side. I did — but not everyone in this house did. And when the energy in a room is low before the day has even started, you can either leave it or do something about it. I had just come back from a yoga restore class. I went to the kitchen.

This smoothie was made for the house. Two glasses, one for each of them. Banana for the potassium and the mood — there is a reason bananas are one of the most studied foods for serotonin support. Coffee for the lift. Protein and creatine because the body needs something to work with, not just something to feel. Honey because it is always honey. Cocoa because it tastes like something you actually want to drink. And a cold oat milk foam on top dusted with pumpkin spice, because it is autumn and because it looked beautiful and because sometimes that matters.

I will write a proper post about my morning, to which I woke up happy and light. This is very unusual. But I for ones was the one to carry the morning with a light body and soul filled with love — and could care for the ones that did not wake up on bright side. For now, this is the smoothie I served. (One could think I think a smoothie can solve everything thing 🤣- I don't, please believe me) The smoothie worked some. That is enough.

The recipe, step by step

Banana, cocoa powder, whey protein, and coffee loaded into the blender
Everything in before the blend — banana, cocoa, protein, coffee

What you'll need

  • 2 ripe bananas
  • ½ cup brewed coffee — one Nespresso cup, cooled slightly
  • Oat milk — enough to fill the blender to your preferred consistency (roughly ¾–1 cup)
  • 1 scoop whey protein powder
  • 1 scoop creatine
  • ¼ teaspoon Himalayan pink salt
  • 2 teaspoons raw honey
  • 1 tablespoon Hershey's cocoa powder
  • A small drizzle of rapeseed oil
  • For the foam: oat milk, cold-frothed
  • To finish: a dusting of pumpkin spice

How to make it

  1. 1

Brew your Nespresso and let it cool for a few minutes — you do not want to add boiling liquid to the blender with the protein powder.

  2. 2

Add the bananas, cooled coffee, oat milk, whey protein, creatine, salt, honey, and cocoa powder to the blender.

  3. 3

Blend until completely smooth. The banana gives you a thick, creamy base — if it is too thick, add a splash more oat milk and blend again.

  4. 4

While the smoothie is blending, cold-froth a small amount of oat milk using the Nespresso Aeroccino on the cold setting. You want a light, airy foam — not warm.

  5. 5

Pour the smoothie into glasses, filling them about three-quarters of the way.

  6. 6

Spoon the cold oat milk foam over the top.

  7. 7

Dust with pumpkin spice and serve immediately.

Why it works

  • Banana: Banana is one of the most studied foods for mood support. It contains tryptophan — a precursor to serotonin, the neurotransmitter most closely associated with feelings of wellbeing and calm. It also provides vitamin B6, which is required for the conversion of tryptophan into serotonin, making the two nutrients work together directly. Potassium supports healthy nerve function and helps regulate the stress response. The natural sugars in banana provide a fast, accessible energy source that the brain can use immediately — which is exactly what a low-mood morning needs.
  • Coffee: Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors in the brain — adenosine is the compound that builds up during waking hours and creates the sensation of tiredness. By blocking it, caffeine increases alertness, improves reaction time, and elevates mood. Coffee also stimulates the release of dopamine, the neurotransmitter associated with motivation and reward. A single Nespresso cup provides a clean, measured dose — enough to lift without overstimulating. Blended into a smoothie with banana and protein, the caffeine is absorbed more slowly, producing a sustained effect rather than a spike.
  • Whey protein: Whey protein is a complete protein — it contains all nine essential amino acids, including leucine, which directly stimulates muscle protein synthesis. It is the fastest-absorbing protein available, reaching the muscles within 30–60 minutes of consumption. For a morning when the body needs to function well, whey provides the building blocks for neurotransmitter production, immune function, and sustained energy. It also contributes to satiety, which means the mood lift from this smoothie lasts longer than a coffee alone would.
  • Creatine: Creatine is best known as a performance supplement, but the research on its cognitive effects is compelling. The brain uses creatine phosphate as an energy reserve — supplementing creatine increases the brain's available energy supply, which has been shown to improve working memory, reduce mental fatigue, and support mood, particularly in people who are sleep-deprived or under stress. A 2022 meta-analysis found that creatine supplementation significantly improved cognitive performance in tasks requiring short-term memory and reasoning. For a low-mood morning, this is not just a muscle supplement.
  • Cocoa powder: Cocoa is rich in flavanols — particularly epicatechin — which increase cerebral blood flow and support the production of nitric oxide, improving oxygen and nutrient delivery to the brain. It also contains theobromine, a mild stimulant that provides a gentler, longer-lasting lift than caffeine alone. Cocoa stimulates the release of endorphins and contains small amounts of phenylethylamine, a compound associated with feelings of pleasure and excitement. The combination of cocoa and coffee in this smoothie creates a layered stimulant effect — the coffee lifts fast, the cocoa sustains it.
  • Raw honey: Raw honey provides natural sugars — primarily fructose and glucose — that the brain can use as an immediate energy source. Unlike refined sugar, raw honey also contains trace minerals, enzymes, and antioxidants that support overall metabolic function. The glucose in honey supports the release of serotonin in the brain, contributing to the mood-lifting effect of this smoothie. Two teaspoons is a meaningful but measured dose — enough to sweeten and support without spiking blood sugar sharply.
  • Himalayan pink salt: A pinch of Himalayan salt in a smoothie does more than round out the flavour. Sodium is an essential electrolyte that supports nerve function, fluid balance, and the transmission of signals between brain cells. Low sodium can contribute to fatigue, poor concentration, and low mood — particularly in the morning before the body has had a chance to rehydrate. A quarter teaspoon is a small but effective dose that supports electrolyte balance without adding a perceptible saltiness to the drink.
  • Oat milk: Oat milk provides beta-glucan — a soluble fibre that slows the absorption of the natural sugars in this smoothie, moderating the energy curve and preventing a sharp blood sugar spike. It is a source of B vitamins, particularly B2 and B12 in fortified versions, which support energy metabolism and nervous system function. The Oatly Barista edition froths beautifully cold — the fat content and protein structure hold the foam long enough to dust with pumpkin spice and serve.
  • Pumpkin spice: Pumpkin spice is a blend of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves — each of which has its own functional properties. Cinnamon supports blood sugar regulation by improving insulin sensitivity. Ginger is anti-inflammatory and supports digestion. Nutmeg contains myristicin, a compound with mild mood-lifting and sedative properties. Cloves are among the most antioxidant-rich spices available. As a finishing dusting on the foam, the dose is small — but the warmth, the aroma, and the signal that it is autumn are part of what makes this smoothie feel like a reset.
