Down to Earth Protein & Creatine Smoothie

September 22, 2026

This is a training day smoothie as well as a restorative one if your body needs to rest to heal to restore. Water, cucumber, spinach, a few arugula leaves, apple, lemon zest, creatine, vanilla whey protein, raw honey, Himalayan salt, rapeseed oil, and ice. Nothing complicated. Everything intentional.

Lemon wedges, whey protein, creatine, honey and cucumber loaded into the blender — all the ingredients before blending

The base is light — water and cucumber rather than juice or milk — which keeps it clean and easy to drink before or after a workout. The apple adds a gentle natural sweetness and body without making this heavy. The spinach and arugula add the greens without making this taste like a salad. Just a few arugula leaves give the smoothie a quiet peppery note that works against the sweetness of the honey and the brightness of the lemon.

The creatine and whey protein go in together. Creatine is flavourless and dissolves completely — you will not taste it. The whey adds the protein without changing the texture. Both blend clean.

The lemon zest is the detail that lifts this above a standard green smoothie. Just the outer yellow peel — no white pith, no bitterness. The zest is where the flavonoids are concentrated, and it adds brightness without any harsh edge.

What you'll need

  • 1 cup water
  • ¾ English cucumber — roughly chopped
  • 1 cup baby spinach
  • A few fresh arugula leaves
  • ½ apple — cored and roughly chopped (skin on)
  • Peel of 1 seedless lemon — outer zest only, no white pith
  • 1 scoop creatine powder
  • 1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder
  • A pinch of Himalayan pink salt
  • 2 generous spoonfuls of raw honey
  • 1 tablespoon cold-pressed rapeseed oil
  • Ice, to taste

How to make it

  1. 1

Use a vegetable peeler to remove just the outer zest of the lemon — take only the yellow part and leave the white pith behind. Add the zest to the blender along with the water, cucumber, apple, spinach, and arugula leaves.

  2. 2

Add the creatine, whey protein, Himalayan salt, honey, and rapeseed oil.

  3. 3

Add a small handful of ice.

  4. 4

Blend on the smoothie setting until completely smooth. Run the cycle twice — the second pass is what makes the texture silky.

  5. 5

Taste and adjust. A little more honey softens the lemon. A little more salt lifts everything. Pour and serve immediately.

Why it works

  • English cucumber: Cucumber is over 95% water, which makes it one of the most hydrating foods you can blend into a drink. It is a source of vitamin K, potassium, and silica — a mineral that supports connective tissue, skin elasticity, and joint health. The skin contains most of the nutrients, so leaving it on is the right call. Its mild, clean flavour opens the base without competing with the greens.
  • Baby spinach: Spinach is one of the most nutrient-dense leafy greens available. A single cup provides meaningful amounts of vitamin K, vitamin A, folate, iron, and magnesium. It blends completely smooth and has a mild enough flavour that it disappears into the base — you get the nutrition without tasting the greens.
  • Arugula: A few arugula leaves add a subtle peppery note and bring real nutritional value without making the smoothie taste bitter. Arugula is a cruciferous green and a source of vitamin K, vitamin C, folate, and glucosinolates — compounds that support liver detoxification and have been studied for their anti-inflammatory properties. A small amount is enough to contribute without taking over.
  • Apple: Half an apple adds natural sweetness and body to the base without making this heavy. Apple is a source of quercetin, catechin, and chlorogenic acid — plant compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The pectin in the skin and flesh acts as a prebiotic, feeding beneficial gut bacteria. Leave the skin on: that is where the majority of the fibre and polyphenols are concentrated.
  • Lemon zest: Using just the outer zest — and leaving the white pith behind — gives you all the brightness and flavonoids without any bitterness. The zest is where hesperidin and naringenin are concentrated, compounds studied for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The vitamin C it carries also improves the absorption of non-haem iron from the spinach and arugula, and supports collagen synthesis and immune response.
  • Creatine: Creatine is one of the most researched performance supplements available. It increases the availability of phosphocreatine in muscle tissue, which supports the rapid regeneration of ATP — the energy currency your muscles use during high-intensity effort. Regular creatine supplementation has been shown to improve strength, power output, and recovery. It is flavourless, blends completely smooth, and has no effect on the taste or texture of this smoothie.
  • Vanilla whey protein: A single scoop of vanilla whey protein adds 20–25g of complete protein without changing the flavour or texture of this smoothie. Whey is a fast-digesting protein, which makes it effective both post-workout and as a morning protein source — it delivers amino acids quickly, supports muscle repair, and helps maintain satiety through the morning.
  • Raw honey: Two spoonfuls of raw honey balance the sharpness of the lemon and the bitterness of the arugula, and they bring their own nutritional weight. Raw honey contains enzymes, antioxidants, and trace minerals that are destroyed by heat processing. It has natural antimicrobial properties, supports gut health, and provides a slower-releasing energy source than refined sugar.
  • Cold-pressed rapeseed oil: One tablespoon of cold-pressed rapeseed oil blends in completely and adds meaningful nutritional value without changing the flavour of this smoothie. Rapeseed oil has one of the best omega-3 to omega-6 ratios of any cooking oil, and the fat it provides is essential for absorbing the fat-soluble vitamins — particularly vitamin K and vitamin A — from the spinach and arugula. Cold-pressed preserves the natural antioxidants and keeps the omega-3 content intact.
  • Himalayan pink salt: A pinch of Himalayan pink salt does two things in this smoothie: it lifts and balances the other flavours, and it replaces the electrolytes — particularly sodium and trace minerals — that are lost through sweat during exercise. It is a small addition with a meaningful effect on both taste and recovery.
