Scalp Psoriasis, Enthesitis, and the Solution That Found Me

I live with severe scalp psoriasis — thick plaques, intense itch, cracks, and bleeding. After the Walgreens wash I relied on was discontinued, my scalp flared hard and nothing worked. Then Nizoral Psoriasis Shampoo felt like a solution. This is the honest, unpolished version of what that looks like in real life.

Scalp Psoriasis, Enthesitis, and the Solution That Found Me

I live with quite severe scalp psoriasis.

Not "a little flaky." Thick layers, severe itch, cracks, and bleeding. When it flares, it gets into sleep, clothes, hair days, how close I want to stand to people, and how much energy I have left.

It isn't only skin for me. It's connected to joint and attachment pain — enthesitis: where tendons and ligaments meet bone. I feel that full picture. Ligaments that hurt. Midlife doesn't make it gentler. I'll write about psoriatic arthritis itself in a separate post, but here is a short summary.

The link to joints and ligaments

Psoriasis isn't only skin. A large share of people with psoriasis also get psoriatic arthritis (PsA) over time. Scalp (and nails) involvement is one of the features doctors watch as higher risk for PsA — it doesn't mean everyone with scalp psoriasis gets arthritis.

PsA often includes:

  • Painful, stiff, swollen joints
  • Enthesitis — inflammation where tendons and ligaments attach to bone (heels/Achilles, soles, sometimes elsewhere) — people describe deep ligament/tendon ache, not only "joint" pain
  • Flares and quieter spells; without care, damage can build

Treatments take time. If they work. That's been my experience.

Walgreens psoriasis wash used to clear me. They stopped making it. My scalp flared hard again — thick, itchy, cracking — no matter what I tried. I'd almost given up.

Then this last try surprised me.

What works for me may not work for you — scalp psoriasis is not one-size-fits-all, and what clears one person can do nothing for another. But if you have been stuck and running out of options, it could be worth a try. Always consult your doctor or dermatologist before changing your treatment routine.

Nizoral Psoriasis Shampoo & Conditioner felt different after the first wash, better after the second. This one feels like a miracle — and I don't say that lightly. I can't wait to keep using it and see if it clears me the way Walgreens once did. I also use it with the AIMIKE Scalp Massager Shampoo Brush — the silicone bristles work the shampoo right into the scalp and the massage itself is genuinely relieving.

For the enthesitis ache I use Boiron Arnicare Arthritis Cream.

This is midlife reclaim in real life: whole foods in the kitchen, and also the unpretty scalp nights. The itch keeps you awake. The pain doesn't make it any easier to get through the night. Both of them together — that's the reality of it.
